What message do you want to send?

December 12, 2017

Last week, we discussed the "Busy Trap" in which many small businesses get stuck. We discussed the pitfalls of being busy, and the impact it can have on your business. What we also know is that most small business owners that we work with have excellent customer care regardless of how busy they get. Sure, as true entrepreneurs, they can, and will, always see ways to improve service; but most of the time when our clients get stuck in the "Busy Trap" it is their own business that begins to suffer. For example, they:
  • Miss, are late, or not prepared for internal meetings, but rarely, if ever, for client meetings

  • Lead Generation comes to a halt, but they always have time to talk to a client

  • Always have time to deal with fires, but there simply is no time to plan for this week, let alone next year.
The truth is, personal and internal commitments are much easier to let slide. Who's going to notice? Who's going to care? What else can you do? Often times it feels like something has to give and it's not the client that's going to suffer.

What we want you to see is that all the missed personal and internal commitments send a strong message to your team. For example, they might not care if they have that sales meeting today, but if it's cancelled and not immediately rescheduled the message is that it's not that important.

We challenge you to stop today and think about any personal and internal commitments that are important, but you tend to let slide. What message does it send to your team? And more importantly, what message do you want to send to your team?

It's important to note that we understand. As a business owner, your schedule is often jam packed. There's so much to do and honestly it rarely feels as if there are enough resources to get everything done. No one expects you to be perfect, but it's important to design a balance that includes your personal and internal commitments.  The answer isn't as simple as doing one thing, but here are three steps to get you started today:
  1. Work on saying no, or at least, not right now. You're not super human. Be realistic to what you can get done within your work week.  Before putting a task on your to-do list make sure you estimate the time it takes to complete the task.

  2. Understand that your number one client is, and always has to be, your business. If you don't make the time to work on your business then your business will always struggle to thrive.

  3. Prioritization and Time Blocking are your best tools. Everything has to get done, but everything can't, and doesn't have to, get done right now; and it doesn't always have to be done by you.
