An Intentional Approach to Leadership
What type of leader do you want to be? On the surface it’s a simple question, but it’s a question that often doesn’t get enough attention. Leadership is more than just skills; it's about intention. While many leaders invest in learning leadership techniques, it's equally important to define their personal leadership style. This intentional approach ensures that your leadership aligns with your values, goals, and the culture you want to foster.
Here are three steps to help you become an intentional leader:
- Self-Awareness: Understand your personality and communication style. Tools like DISC profiles, especially 360 profiles, can provide valuable insights into your strengths and areas for improvement. This foundation will help you tailor your leadership approach to your unique qualities.
- Identify Desired Qualities: Create a list of up to five leadership traits you admire and want to embody. To create this list, consider traits you want to improve on, strengths you want to use more, and even consider the culture you want to cultivate and ask yourself, "What kind of leader do I need to be to achieve that?"
- Create Your Intentional Leadership Statement: Combine your chosen qualities into a powerful statement that inspires you. Place it where you can see it daily such as on your desk and refer to it during challenging moments to stay focused on your leadership goals.
By following these steps, you can develop a leadership style that is authentic, effective, and aligned with your vision. Remember, leadership is a journey, and consistent self-reflection and intentional action are key to becoming the leader you aspire to be.
